The Gendarmerie of the Republic of Turkey is the armed general law enforcement force affiliated to the Ministry of Interior, which ensures the protection of security and public order, and fulfills the duties assigned by other laws and Presidential Decrees.
In the victorious history of the Turkish Army, whose foundation dates back to 209 BC, services for providing security and public order, even though its name is not the Gendarmerie; It was carried out by law enforcement officers with specialized military status, referred to as yargan, subaşı and zaptiye.
With the Tanzimat Fermanı declared on November 3, 1839, the duty of protecting the life and property of the people was fulfilled by the officers sent to the command of the provincial and starboard governorships.

Gendarmerie units both continued their internal security duties and participated in the defense of the homeland as an integral part of the armed forces on many fronts during the First World War between 1914-1918 and the War of Independence between 1919-1922.
After the proclamation of the Republic on October 29, 1923, reform efforts were initiated in the Gendarmerie, as in many other institutions of the state.
In this context; Gendarmerie Regional Inspectorates and Provincial Gendarmerie Regiment Commands were reorganized and Mobile Gendarmerie Units were strengthened.
In 1937, "Gendarmerie Organization and Duty Nizamname” came into force and with this law, in addition to the duties of security and public order, the duty of protecting prisons was given to the Gendarmerie.
Gendarmerie in 1939; It was reorganized into four groups as Fixed Gendarmerie Units, Mobile Gendarmerie Units, Gendarmerie Training Units and Schools.
With a law that came into force in 1956, the duty and responsibility of the security and protection of our border, coastal and territorial waters, and the prevention, follow-up and investigation of smuggling in customs areas, carried out by the General Customs Command, were given to the Gendarmerie General Command. This task was transferred to the Land Forces Command as of 21 March 2013.
The task of protecting our coastal and territorial waters, which was carried out by the Gendarmerie until 1982, was transferred to the Coast Guard Command, which was established in the same year.
In 1983, the Law No. 2803 on the Organization, Duties and Powers of the Gendarmerie, which constitutes the basic legislation of today's Gendarmerie, entered into force.
The Gendarmerie General Command became a full member of the International Union of Gendarmes and Law Enforcement Forces with Military Status, which was established in 1994 and whose short name is FIEP, in order to provide cooperation and exchange of experience between European countries and the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
It became a member of the European Gendarmerie Force, which was established in 2004 in order to ensure general security and public order in crisis regions of the world, on 27 May 2010, with observer status.
In 2016, the Gendarmerie General Command was subordinated to the Ministry of Interior with the amendment made in the 668th article of the Law on the Organization, Duties and Authorities of the Gendarmerie No. 2803 with the Decree No. 4.
The Gendarmerie of the Republic of Turkey, which has always strived for the peace and security of the society since its establishment, has adopted the community-supported public order service, where the rights of individuals and institutions are observed within the framework of the rule of law, human rights and freedoms.
