Taking advantage of the lessons learned from rallies, Pirelli began offering 'run flat' technology in road tires in 2001. The most important benefit of this technology is when the tire is punctured, and it allows drivers to continue without being on the road. In this technology, which has been tried and tested for the first time in rallies, the tires contain a reinforced structure. Although the rally is the scene of intense competition and struggles on very different grounds, a tire puncture that can cost minutes, cars can continue on their way thanks to this technology.

NEW MATERIALS TO INCREASE COMFORT AND SUSTAINABILITY

Continuous research and development of new materials and processes helps Pirelli to improve the driving comfort of cars equipped with Run Flat tires. In addition to the new technologies in the structure of the tires, advances in the materials used also provide more comfort to the drivers, reducing fuel consumption and harmful emissions by improving the rolling resistance. The ability of these tires to absorb unevenness on the road zamIt was further refined and moved to the same level of comfort as standard tires. Thus, even if the tire pressure drops completely, it can be continued until the nearest tire service. Specifying Run Flat tires in accordance with their specific suspension characteristics in the user manuals of the vehicles always encourages the drivers to use tires with this technology. In this way, even when changing at the end of the tire life, the performance of the car is not compromised.

OFFERS A GREAT ADVANTAGE FOR ELECTRIC CARS

Electric vehicles usually do not have a spare wheel to create more space for batteries. Many manufacturers therefore prefer longer range mobility solutions such as Run Flat or 'Self Sealing' to minimize the disadvantages of a puncture. Specially designed Run Flat tires enable electric vehicle drivers to continue their journey safely in case of a puncture. Run Flat technology will play an important role in future autonomous driving systems by helping to keep the vehicle under control even in an emergency.

MORE THAN 1.000 VERSIONS ARE DEVELOPED AND MORE THAN 70 MILLION RUN FLAT TIRES PRODUCED

Pirelli engineers have developed over 20 different tire versions with 'run flat' technology in the last 1.000 years. This technology enables drivers to travel up to 80 kilometers at a maximum speed of 80 km / h and change their tires safely. Among the many automotive manufacturers that have adopted this solution are brands such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Alfa Romeo that demand 'run flat' tires for their new cars as original equipment. Some of the more than 20 million 'run flat' technology summer, winter and all season tires produced by Pirelli in the last 70 years, some of the full range of BMW and Mini, the majority of the Mercedes range, including the Alfa Romeo Giulia, Audi Q5 and Q7 zamIt is used in the most powerful and prestigious cars of the moments.

PIRELLI OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF PRODUCTS IN 'RUN FLAT' TECHNOLOGY

Today, more than a dozen premium and prestige car manufacturers, including Audi, Alfa Romeo, BMW, Jeep, Mercedes-Benz and Rolls-Royce, are using 'run flat' technology tires from Pirelli. This technology is available in more than 50 models that Pirelli has homologated for use by automakers. On the sidewall of all these tires, there are 'run flat' inscriptions, as well as markings indicating the relevant car manufacturer. This technology is used in some tires with Pirelli Elect and PNCS Pirelli Noise Canceling System. Of these, Pirelli Elect is geared towards electric cars and focuses on a structure that will support low rolling resistance, reduction of tire noise, instant handling and the weight of a battery powered vehicle. PNCS, on the other hand, focuses on reducing tire noise perceived inside the vehicle, thanks to a special sound deadening material inside the tire. For punctures up to four millimeters, this technology works with a special foam that instantly covers the foreign material that punctures the tire and prevents pressure loss. When the foreign matter is removed, the foam continues to expand, blocking the hole. Thus, it is ensured that the driver can continue on the road safely and with maximum comfort.

DEVELOPED WITH ROBOTIC TECHNOLOGIES AND OFFERED TO ROADS

State-of-the-art 'Run flat' tires are the result of Pirelli's innovative MIRS manufacturing process, a process in which 'raw' tires produced using robots are fully computer controlled. Thus, the final product is guaranteed to meet high quality and reliability standards. Pirelli's self-supporting 'run flat' system uses special reinforcements placed in the sidewall structure and capable of supporting lateral and transverse forces acting on the car even when there is no tire pressure.
