General Surgery and Surgical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Gürkan Yetkin gave important information on the subject. The incidence of breast cancer, which is the most common cancer in women, increases rapidly after the age of 30. Breast cancer progresses differently from person to person, some are loud and fast, while others are soft. The main reason for this is that there are different subtypes of breast cancer. However, the most important thing is that breast cancer is detected early and treated in the most effective way according to its stage. One of the cancers that responds best to treatment is breast cancer. The earlier breast cancer is caught, the easier and more effective treatment becomes. In the early stages, breast conserving surgery, that is, removing only the cancerous tissue, may be sufficient. In more advanced stages, surgery is possible by protecting the nipple and breast skin and applying implants (silicone).
Dr. Yetkin continued his words as follows: “The cause of breast cancer is not known exactly. However, there are risk factors that can lead to breast cancer. Risk factors are reasons that increase a person's likelihood of developing breast cancer compared to normal. Among them; Familial (genetic) reasons, Hormonal reasons, previous radiation to the chest area are the most important. If we elaborate on the risk factors, it can be counted being overweight or obese (obese), not doing enough physical activity, having never given birth or having had the first birth after the age of 30, using birth control pills and injections, taking hormone therapy after menopause, and using alcohol. " said.
The most important factor in early diagnosis is the awareness of the person on this issue. It is very important to know the symptoms of breast cancer, to perform breast self-examination once a month, to have a physician examination and screening mammography once a year in early diagnosis.
Dr. Gürkan Yetkin finally stated the following: “As in all cancers; Healthy eating habits (rich in vegetables and fruits), physical activity appropriate for the age of the person (such as walking for 45-60 minutes per day), maintaining a healthy weight and staying at this weight reduce the risk of breast cancer. There are studies showing that especially 1,5-2 years of breastfeeding also protects the mother from breast cancer.
