Istanbul Okan University Hospital Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases Specialist Assoc. Dr. Yusuf Aydın said, “Diabetes is spreading like an epidemic in the world and in our country.
In studies conducted in our society, it was determined that there is 15 percent diabetes. In addition to these, when 10 percent of our prediabetes patients are added to this figure, it has been revealed that there is a clinical condition with a high blood sugar rate of close to 25%. ''
Coronavirus Warning to Diabetes Patients
Assoc. Dr. Yusuf Aydın said, '' It is announced every day how many people die due to Covid-19 infection and how many people are in intensive care. Today, one person dies every 6 seconds due to diabetes and its complications. This means that 1500 people die every day in the world from diabetes. In addition, 50 percent of patients who start dialysis every day are due to diabetes, 50 percent of foot amputations are caused by diabetes, and 50 percent of heart attacks are caused by diabetes. Considering these numbers, the question arises whether we show enough care and attention in combating diabetes. ''
Assoc. Dr. Yusuf Aydın said, “We can say no to this question briefly, but we can express it scientifically. The most important way to prevent and protect from the complications of diabetes is good blood sugar regulation. Good fasting and satiety blood sugars and as a result, good 1-month average called HbA3c will guide us in terms of diabetes control in diabetic patients. ''
Community Precautions Must Be Taken For Diabetes
The lower the HbA1c level in diabetic patients in our society, the better we are in blood sugar control and diabetes control. But research unfortunately does not say that. Even the patients who are followed up in the best centers are in a very bad condition in terms of reaching the goal. The average HbA1c rate of diabetic patients in our country varies between 8,3-8.8%. The HbA1c level is below 7% and the figure is around 25%. Although there are many new drugs and treatments such as insulin, the treatment success in our patients does not seem very good. In fact, this ratio is similar not only in our country but also in many developed countries. It is a fact that important complications such as eye, kidney, heart and diabetes foot will be seen less in diabetic patients whose blood sugars can be controlled well. Therefore, a collective mobilization is needed in order to be more conscious of diabetes patients as a society. Plans and measures should be taken at national level rather than individual efforts.
The Reason of Diabetes in Younger Age Obesity
Another important problem is that the age of type 2 diabetes in our society has decreased to the age of 25. The most important reason why type 2 Diabetes, which we used to describe as a disease seen in the elderly, started to be seen in such early periods is the increased obesity. The most important cause of obesity is malnutrition and decreased movement. For this reason, the necessity of a healthy diet and a lively life should be implemented in the very early stages of social projects that will penetrate the brains of individuals starting from primary and secondary school.
Assoc. Dr. Yusuf Aydın said, '' I worry that one out of every 2025 people will have diabetes in 4 if the measures are not taken. Healthy societies emerge with healthy individuals. It develops in healthy individuals from those who eat healthy and act healthy. It is imperative to enter a national program to prevent and combat diabetes. ''
