Quality Life is Possible in Kidney Disease

While many wrong behaviors we do in our daily life, from unhealthy nutrition to inactivity, from excessive salt consumption to insufficient water consumption, disrupt the health of our kidneys; In recent years, the number of kidney patients has been increasing rapidly both in the world and in our country.

Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine Head of Nephrology Department and Acıbadem International Hospital Internal Medicine and Nephrology Specialist Prof. Dr. Ülkem Çakır said, “Our kidneys undertake many important tasks in our body, from the removal of toxic substances to the production of bone marrow and healthy blood. Our kidneys must be healthy for all our organs to function properly. However, we rapidly wear out our kidneys with our wrong living habits. The number of kidney patients in our country has reached 9 million and one out of every 6-7 adults is a kidney disease. " says. Stating that the Executive Board of the World Kidney Day has declared 2021 as the year of "Good Life with Kidney Disease", Prof. Dr. In a statement made within the scope of March 11, World Kidney Day, Ülkem Çakır explained the 4 rules of a "good life" for kidney patients, and made important warnings and suggestions.

Exercise regularly!

Especially in the last year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, inevitable inactivity has reached the extreme. However, regular exercise plays a key role in both protecting kidney health and fighting kidney disease. Regular exercise; Especially 45 minutes of brisk walking to be done at least three days a week is of great importance for the blood supply of the kidneys. Staying away from sedentary life provides support in the process of fighting kidney disease.

Drink 1,5-2 liters of water a day necessarily!

The most basic need for the kidneys to function properly is water! The harmful substances filtered from the blood with the water we drink are turned into urine and removed from our body in this way. When there is not enough water in our body, our kidneys use much more power to work and the wear and tear accelerates. For this reason, kidney patients need to drink 1,5-2 liters of water every day in order to improve their quality of life.

Avoid excessive salt consumption!

While the World Health Organization warns not to consume more than 5 grams of salt per day, that is, one teaspoon of salt, daily salt consumption in our country reaches 18 grams. Since excess salt is a complete enemy for our health and kidneys, reducing salt is the most important step in kidney disease treatment. There is no need to add salt to the food as we get 2 grams of salt from the vegetables even when we do not add any salt.

Get rid of your extra weight!

Weight gain causes protein leakage in the urine as well as obesity. For this reason, it is very important to lose excess weight and maintain ideal weight with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Since obesity is spreading rapidly in children today, kidney disease has also become seen in childhood. It is necessary to prevent the inactivity of children and to encourage them to have a healthy diet and sports.

Prof. Dr. Ülkem Çakır: "Do not make this mistake in treatment!"

Stating that the Executive Board of the World Kidney Day has declared 2021 as the year of "Living Well with Kidney Disease", Prof. Dr. Ülkem Çakır said, “This year's slogan is; emphasizes that managing kidney disease in the best way is only possible if healthcare professionals, patients and their relatives are a team together. It is important to establish a strong partnership with patients and their relatives in the development of practices that enable patients to live well. Our goal is to give kidney patients confidence and hope that they can live well with this disease. " says. Prof. Dr. Ülkem Çakır says: “However, this disease-centered approach may fail because it does not reflect patients' priorities and values satisfactorily. It should not be forgotten that people living with kidney disease also have the right to live well and maintain their social functionality, in short, to have control over their lives. The disease-focused approach, rather than the patient, eliminates the representation of patients as they are not meaningfully involved in the management and treatment of their disease. In the follow-up of the disease, it is very important for the patients and the treatment team to act together and to consider the feelings and thoughts of the patients during the treatment process. The fact that patients are active in this process helps them to be more satisfied with their treatment and thus to achieve more successful clinical results.
