Genetic-Based Hearing Loss May Occur in 30s

Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Istanbul Medipol University Prof. Dr. Yıldırım Ahmet Bayazıt said that there are various causes of hearing loss due to adulthood and age, but if there is a genetic predisposition, it may cause symptoms in the 30s.

The incidence of hearing loss increases with age. Ear diseases and problems between the central nervous system and the auditory pathways are among the main causes of hearing loss, which is similar in almost every country. Istanbul Medipol Hospital Ear Nose Throat Diseases Department Head Prof. Dr. Yıldırım Ahmet Bayazıt touched upon the causes of hearing loss and drew attention to the fact that individuals with a family history of hearing loss may experience this problem starting from the age of 30.

"Chronic diseases can cause as much structural disorders of the ear"

Prof. Dr. Yıldırım Ahmet Bayazıt stated that some diseases in the body may cause hearing loss by indirectly affecting the hearing system and said: “Structural problems of the ear such as atresia, formation of ear plugs such as plugs, eardrum and eustachian tube problems, acute and chronic ear infections, middle ear Causes such as calcifications or congenital anomalies affecting the ossicular structure or movement, structural disorders of the inner ear, and Meniere's disease affecting the inner ear dynamics can be considered primarily. In addition to these, viral infections, toxic reactions caused by certain chemicals in the inner ear, pressure trauma, other ear and head trauma, exposure to sudden and loud noise or prolonged noise, ear or brainstem tumors are among the causes.

Pointing out that neurological diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), blood diseases such as leukemia, endocrine and metabolic diseases such as diabetes and rheumatism may also be the cause of hearing loss. Dr. Yıldırım Ahmet Bayazıt added that individuals suspected of hearing loss should definitely consult an ENT specialist. “After the tests performed with simple examinations and tests, the treatment of hearing loss can be done according to the condition of the patient. With the application of a hearing aid or hearing implant in cases of advanced loss, the patient can regain hearing ability again, ”said Prof. Dr. Yıldırım Ahmet Bayazıt said that there is no age limit for implants in adults who later lost their hearing. However, he emphasized that the implant procedure should be done as soon as possible after hearing loss occurs, otherwise the efficiency of the implant may be low or the adaptation of the person to the auditory implant may be difficult.

"If the hearing aid is not beneficial, a hearing implant may be the appropriate solution."

If a person has a severe hearing loss and does not benefit from a conventional hearing aid, the relevant physician may decide that the implant procedure is appropriate in the light of the clinical evaluation and tests. Dr. Yıldırım Bayazıt stated that the cochlear implant procedure of the patient can be approved within the scope of SSI reimbursement in tertiary hospital conditions with certain conditions. Dr. Bayazıt continued as follows: “A person with a hearing loss should apply to the otolaryngology clinic of a tertiary hospital authorized to perform this procedure in order to have cochlear implant surgery. Cochlear implantation is applied in many tertiary health institutions in our country. After the first examination by the ear nose throat physician, the patient's hearing and speech tests are performed. Ear structure is visualized by radiological methods. If the relevant physician concludes that the patient is an implant candidate, the patient is included in the surgery program with the committee report to be issued with the signature of three otolaryngologists.

Emphasizing that untreated hearing losses start to cause psychological and social problems in the person and his / her immediate environment, Dr. Bayazıt stated that in these people who started to be isolated from the society, depression started and the person's communication skills and learning ability started to decrease. Stating that there is a relationship between untreated hearing loss and early dementia (dementia), Dr. Bayazıt, when hearing loss is noticed zamHe pointed out that it is critical to go to an ENT specialist without losing the moment.
