What Are the Side Effects of Covid-19 Vaccine?

While the Covid-19 vaccination process continues; Many questions are still waiting for answers. Vaccine frequency and dose, the necessity of quarantine process, side effects of the vaccine, and the necessity of the first dose and the second dose of vaccine to be the same are among the most curious issues of the public. Stating that there is no need for a quarantine process after vaccination, experts emphasize that the first and second dose vaccines must be the same vaccine. Experts state that a period of 28 or 1 months should pass after the first dose of vaccine and recommend that the nearest health facility be consulted in case of aggravation of symptoms.

Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Specialist Dr. Songül Özer shared important information about the curious issues about the Covid-19 vaccine.

There should be 28 days or 1 month between two doses of vaccine

Stating that the antibody level in the body can reach a certain level with the first vaccine, Dr. Songül Özer said, “That's why it is not enough to protect it fully. In order for the antibody level to rise more and stay in the body for a longer time, the second vaccine must be given after about 28 days or 1 month. There is currently no clear information about how long the vaccine can be protective. The nearest zamwe encountered an influenza pandemic now. If we think like influenza, we believe that this vaccine will protect for an average of 1 year. This period may be longer or shorter. It is difficult to share clear information for the moment. "We think it will be repeated once a year according to the current information we have."

No quarantine required after vaccination

Emphasizing that there is absolutely no need to go into quarantine after vaccination, Özer said, “We think that we take the vaccine under protection after we have it and increase the protection after the second dose. We apply the quarantine to people who are actively spreading viruses with respiratory secretions or who are likely to shed. Vaccinated persons do not have active viruses in their body. Since it is not an active virus, there is no possibility of ridicule, infection, spread because there is no disease. Therefore, we can say that quarantine is absolutely unnecessary ”.

The exact effects of the vaccine are not yet clear

Stating that any scientist does not think they have information about the effects of the vaccine, Dr. Songül Özer continued her words as follows:

“That's why the first 3 phase trials are done. The first phase is mostly on animals, in the second phase with a narrower group of people, in the third phase, a longer time and more people are tested. That long has not passed yet. The disease has been in our lives for only 1 year. The vaccine has been around for a much shorter time. Therefore, we do not know the long-term effects of the disease and we certainly do not know the effects of the vaccine. There are other vaccines in our lives that have been developed with this technique. We have been using vaccines developed not against coronavirus but against other viruses for decades. There are vaccines we have used for 60-70 years. We know what they are doing in the long run. None of them had side effects incompatible with life. Of course, it can cause itching and redness when vaccinated. That's why we keep the person we vaccinated under observation for half an hour. Since we have no experience yet, there is no information about what impact it might have in the long term.

If the symptoms become severe, the health institution should be consulted.

Pointing out that as recommended by the Ministry of Health, the person vaccinated for 15-30 minutes should be kept under observation in terms of first reactions. Songül Özer said, “We also started vaccination in our hospital. We keep the people we vaccinated under the supervision of a nurse and a physician for half an hour. The first symptom may be redness, itching or pain at the injection site. Maybe there may be headache or muscle pain the first night. There may be sensitivity, especially in the area where the vaccine was given. Apart from these symptoms, we do not expect much of an effect. We consider the occurrence of these symptoms normal. We can say that there are local effects that can occur with all vaccines administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously. When there is pain, they can take a paracetamol type pain reliever, fever reducer. "If these symptoms get worse after leaving the hospital after the first half hour, they should apply to their doctor or the nearest health institution," he said.

Two doses of vaccine must be exactly the same

Expressing that the necessity of the first dose of vaccine and the second dose of vaccine being the same brand is one of the frequently asked questions, Özer said, “They cannot decide which of the vaccines produced by inactive and mRNA techniques to prefer. There are questions such as can I have one dose from one and the second dose from another. This is not possible. If the first dose was vaccinated with inactivated vaccine, the second dose should be the same. We do not say that the vaccine created with the same technique must be exactly the same vaccine. They do not know which region of the virus each vaccine is given against. The technique of making each vaccine is different. Although the method is the same, the region where the virus is run is different. Therefore, it is necessary to make the second dose with the same vaccine of the same company. According to the current statements, after one month of vaccination, only one year later, another brand of vaccine or a different method can be vaccinated, "he said.
