The world is busy with the COVID-19 epidemic, but in 2020, there was an increase in diseases such as cancer, one of the important diseases of our age.
On December 15, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) announced the World Cancer Statistics. These statistics included information for 185 on 36 cancer types in 2020 countries. Stating that 2020 million patients were newly diagnosed with cancer in 19.3 and 10 million cancer-related deaths were calculated according to this, Anadolu Health Center Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, "One out of every 5 people in the world gets cancer in their lifetime and one in 8 men and one in 11 women die due to cancer".
The top 10 cancers account for about 60 percent of all cancers and 70 percent of cancer deaths. Emphasizing that breast cancer is the most common cancer in the world with 2020 percent for the first time in 11.7 and that one out of every 8 cases is breast cancer, Anadolu Medical Center Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. “Lung cancer is observed with a similar frequency to that, 11.4 percent, followed by colon cancer with 10 percent, prostate cancer with 7.3 percent and stomach cancer with 5.6 percent,” said Serdar Turhal.
Lung cancer ranks first in cancer-related deaths
Noting that lung cancer ranks first with 18 percent in cancer-related deaths, Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, "Colon cancer ranks second with 9.4 percent, liver cancer is third with 8.3 percent, stomach cancer is fourth with 7.7 percent, and breast cancer is fifth with 6.9 percent."
Lung cancer in men and breast cancer in women lead to death
Stating that the most common cancer in men and causing death is lung cancer, Prof. Dr. "It is followed by prostate and colon cancer in the frequency of its incidence, followed by liver cancer and colon cancer in the frequency of causing death," said Serdar Turhal. Stating that breast cancer is the most common cancer (one in every 4 cases) and leading to death (one in every 6 deaths) in women, Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, "It is followed by colon cancer and lung cancer in its incidence, and lung cancer and colon cancer in causing death."
It is estimated that 2040 million people will be diagnosed with new cancer in 28.4
Underlining that among the main reasons for the increase in breast cancer, having children at a later age, giving birth to less children, increasing obesity and sedentary life are considered. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “If the current trend is maintained, it is estimated that in 2040, 47 million people will be diagnosed with new cancer, with an increase of 28.4 percent. The countries that will be most affected by this increase are predicted to be countries in the low and medium human development group ”.
