BMW's flagship in electric mobility, the BMW iX, is tested in the toughest road and cold weather conditions and completes the final checks before mass production.

After its launch at the #NEXTGen 2020 virtual event, the BMW iX, which has made a big impact in the automotive world, is approaching the final in the pre-production development process. The electric motors, all-wheel drive system, charging technology and high-voltage batteries, which have successfully passed the endurance tests of the Arctic Circle in the harshest weather conditions, reveal that the BMW iX is ready for mass production to begin in 2021.

To demonstrate the reliability and functionality of the BMW iX under the harshest conditions, suspension control systems and fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology are being tested on deserted roads on the North Cape on the Norwegian island of Magerøya. In this process, test engineers evaluate the interaction between the engine and suspension systems on the low friction surfaces of the road. Components of BMW eDrive technology are subjected to extremely challenging situations during winter testing. Field tests are carried out at extremely low temperatures for high-voltage batteries and charging technology. Thus, while checking the status of the charge level, the temperature ranges in which high-voltage batteries operate at optimum can be followed.

Shaping the Future

Last year, launched the concept of the series production version of the BMW inext scene as the BMW iX, it will be produced at BMW's Dingolfing plant in Germany and Turkey will meet the road in the last quarter of 2021.

The BMW iX, which is planned to lead the future BMW models, takes the standards of electric cars to another dimension with its 500 hp power, performance reaching 0-100 km in less than 5 seconds and its efficient battery that offers more than 600 kilometers of driving range according to WLTP criteria. The battery of the BMW iX, which can reach 40 percent in just 80 minutes with fast charging, is the same zamoffers a driving range of more than 120 km in ten minutes.

The core of the BMW iX's drive system is the fifth generation BMW eDrive, which includes the car's two electric motors, power electronics, high-voltage battery and charging technology. The handling capabilities of the BMW iX and the comfort level in the cabin are ensured by the aluminum space frame with reduced friction force and the class-leading 'Carbon Cage'. The BMW iX's drag coefficient of 0.25 Cd alone contributes 65 kilometers to the BMW iX's range.
