Novartis cooperation with Turkey by October 29 to draw attention to psoriasis Psoriasis Association under the World day of psoriasis patients and the public in order to raise awareness on "Facing the nacreous, Freedom" project was prepared. It is aimed to give hope to psoriasis patients by drawing attention to the difficult journey of psoriasis patients with the project "Face Your Psoriasis, Get Free", in which actor Öykü Karayel takes part. Turkey Psoriasis Association President Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Gürer shared information about psoriasis and treatment methods by introducing the project.

About 1 million people are struggling with psoriasis in Turkey

Psoriasis (Psoriasis), affecting about 1 million people in Turkey, arising from the effects of genetic and environmental factors, recurrent, and chronic systemic diseases. Psoriasis is known as psoriasis among the people because it shows itself with bright, white dandruff on red areas that appear on the skin. Psoriasis most often occurs between the ages of 15-30 and is seen equally in men and women. Emphasizing that those with a family history of the disease have a higher risk than the normal population, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Gürer said, “Genetic factors are at the forefront in psoriasis that starts at an early age and the disease may progress severely. Stress, obesity, smoking and alcohol use are the main factors that trigger psoriasis. "Physical trauma, some medications, infections and hormonal changes can also affect the course of the disease," he said.

Emphasizing that nacreous lesions can be seen all over the skin, they predominantly occur in areas such as the hair root, knee, elbow and coccyx. Dr. Gürer said, “Psoriasis is not just a cosmetic problem. Inflamed joint rheumatism may develop in some patients, which can affect the hand, foot, elbow and knee joints. The rate of these diseases in psoriasis patients is 20-30% ”. Stating that the diagnosis of the disease is usually made by the appearance of the lesions on the skin, Prof. Dr. Gürer stated that in cases where the lesions resemble another disease, a skin biopsy is performed for the correct diagnosis, and various additional examinations can be requested because diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and liver fat are more common in psoriasis patients.

Psoriasis is a non-contagious, treatable disease

Drawing attention to the psychological dimension created by psoriasis on patients, Prof. Dr. Gürer continued his words as follows: “Psoriasis is not a contagious disease. Shaking hands, hugging or similar skin contact does not cause the disease to be passed on to healthy people. But, unfortunately, there is a completely opposite perception in society. Because of this perception, patients are excluded from society, withdrawn, and more stressed. This situation can trigger the disease more. " Stating that patients experience psychological problems due to the discrimination they face in their work and private lives, Prof. Dr. Gürer noted that the rate of depression and anxiety in psoriasis patients is higher than the general population.

Today, there is no treatment that completely eliminates psoriasis, but with appropriate treatments, psoriasis can be controlled and long-term well-being can be maintained. Stating that the treatment is planned considering the severity of the disease, Prof. Dr. Gürer said, “In the first stage, topical treatments are applied by applying drugs such as creams, ointments and lotions directly to the skin. If the disease cannot be controlled with this treatment, phototherapy can be applied. If the lesions are scattered throughout the body, biological treatment is used. Although the disease is controlled with these treatments, every zamIt should not be forgotten that there is a possibility of coming back for the moment ”. Emphasizing that the patient's desire to recover is as important as treatment, Prof. Dr. Gürer said: “The only address that patients can apply for treatment should be dermatology specialists. They should definitely consult their physicians about their hesitation about their treatment and they should never stop the treatment. "

Stating that he was happy to take part in the project, Karayel said, “With the project of Face Your Psoriasis, Get Free, I noticed that psoriasis patients are isolated from the society and become lonely. Unfortunately, we create this situation with our looks and attitude. There is a prejudice against psoriasis in the community. "We wanted to draw attention to the fact that psoriasis is a treatable disease in order to break this prejudice and instill hope in psoriasis patients." Turkey Psoriasis Association President Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Gürer said the following about the project they prepared: “Our goal with the project is to enable psoriasis patients to face the disease and live their lives freely. Psoriasis is now a disease that can be controlled and has treatment alternatives. The important thing is to have patients consult a dermatologist and take the first step.
