First Turkish Made Sports Car Anadol STC-16 Technical Specifications

Anadol STC-16 is an Anadol model whose first prototype was developed in 1972 and was produced only between 1973 and 1975. STC-16 was designed by Eralp Noyan. Thus, after the Revolution, designed in 1961, designed and produced in Turkey and held the first series production sports car and the first Turkish-made cars took the title.

Design

Erdogan Gönül, who became the General Manager of Otosan in 1971 and Vehbi Koç's son-in-law, convinced the Otosan management and received the approval for serial production. STC-16 aimed to provide high-income users and prestige to the Anadol brand in international rallies. Drawing by a team led by Eralp Noyan, a graduate of the Royal Fine Arts Academy in Belgium, STC-16 is inspired by the popular sports car models Datsun 240Z, Saab Sonett, Aston Martin, Ginetta & Marcos. . STC-16 was placed on the production line with the code A4, shortened and modified Anadol chassis and suspension system and 1600cc Ford Mexico engine were used. Gearboxes of high performance British Ford Cortina and Capri models were used as the transmission. The dashboard and dashboards of the STC-16 were no different from the popular Italian and British sports cars of those years. Apart from the mileage and tachometer, the distance indicator, Lucas ammeter, Smiths oil, gasoline and temperature indicators were placed, which can be reset from the new details of that period. At the end of the 11-month project development phase, 3 STC-16 prototypes were first prepared for test drives. Cengiz Topel airport and Istanbul-Adapazarı section of the E-5 highway were selected as test areas. The first crash tests of the STC-16 were also conducted during this period.

Later, STC-16 was taken to the MIRA track in England by Otosan Production Manager Nihat Atasagun for test drives. The STC-16 was met with great interest and attention, as it was thought to be the new sports model of a British brand, during test drives in England and on the highways and streets where it was seen. Due to the “320-E” test plate it carried, it was stopped in many places and information was asked about this new model. During these tests, it was tested by many British pilots, recommendations were made in terms of performance, driving and driving safety, and changes were made in line with these recommendations, and finally in April 1973, the first STC-16 took off from the production line and took its place in showrooms.

Sales and aftermarket

As STC-16 is an abbreviation for "Sport Turkish Car 1600", this expansion is the same zamit is currently stated to mean "Sport Touring Coupé 1600". Young people, on the other hand, adopted this expansion as "Super Turkish Monster 1600".

Unfortunately, STC-16 production did not last long due to the economic crisis caused by the global oil crisis of 1973. The excessive increase in gasoline prices and the increase in the costs of fiberglass, which is a derivative of petroleum, caused the production costs of STC-16 to increase excessively, and the post-production sales to be made at these costs only appeal to the high income group and the gas consumption of the vehicle is high. it caused a very short production life. In those years, STC-50.000 prices were over 55.000 TL, despite the other Anadol models being 16-70.000 TL. Therefore, STC-16 customers remained only rally pilots, sports car enthusiasts.

However, STC-16 gained a well-deserved reputation among the youth of that era. Improved and modified versions entered and won many races in Turkey and the world rally. In the models developed for the rally, instead of the heavy chassis, lighter chassis and 140 HP modified engines were used. As the most known STC-16 pilots; Renç Koçibey, Demir Bükey, Romolo Marcopoli, İskender Aruoba, Cihat Gürkan, Ali Furgaç, Şevki Gökerman, Serdar Bostancı, Murat Okçuoğlu, Cüneyd Işıngör, Mehmet Becce, Hızır Gürel, Derya Karaköse and Osman Arabacı.

During the production of STC-1973, which continued between 1975 and 16, a total of 176 vehicles were produced, most of which were produced in 1973. STC-16s, which are generally produced as "Alanya Yellow" as a color, are also identified with this color. Even though in a small number; There are also white stripes with red or blue stripes used in sports cars of the period.
