Sırrı Süreyya Önder was born in 1962 in the central district of Adıyaman, in a family he referred to as assimilated Turkmen. He was in Ankara when the September 12 coup took place. He went to jail in his first round of arrest. After a long trial, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
