Caution Before Getting Flu and Pneumonia Vaccines!

Experts who warn about flu and pneumonia vaccines, whose importance is increasing in these days when the pandemic is intense, draw attention to the fact that these vaccines are not administered during the course of a high fever disease and during the active infection period.

The experts, stating that the person to be vaccinated should be completely healthy, point out that people over the age of 65 and people with metabolic diseases such as COPD, diabetes, heart and high blood pressure should have flu and pneumonia vaccines. According to experts, it is necessary to consult a doctor, examinations and tests before vaccination.

Stating that the flu vaccine is prepared every year according to the recommendations of the World Health Organization, according to the previous flu strains (as a precaution against the previous year's flu virus), he said that the protection of the flu vaccine is about 6-8 months.

Who should get the flu vaccine?

Prof. Dr. Füsun Eroğlu listed the people who should have the flu vaccine as follows:

  • 65 years and older,
  • Those with chronic lung diseases such as asthma and COPD,
  • Those with cardiovascular diseases such as heart and high blood pressure,
  • Those who have chronic metabolic diseases such as diabetes (Type 1 and 2),
  • Chronic kidney patients,
  • Those with some blood diseases such as anemia and thalassemia,
  • Patients whose immune system is suppressed due to organ transplantation and similar conditions and who use drugs for this purpose.
  • 65 years and older,
  • People with insufficient immune system whose spleen has been removed or whose function is impaired,
  • Those who have some blood diseases,
  • Those who have had an organ transplant,
  • AIDS carrier adults,
  • Those with heart disease, lung disease, diabetes,
  • Those with chronic diseases such as alcoholism, liver and kidney failure.

There are two types of pneumonia vaccine

Prof. Dr. Füsun Eroğlu said, “There are two types of pneumonia vaccine. Both vaccines are dead vaccines free of bacteria. These are Conjugated Pneumococcal vaccine (KPA13) effective on 13 different types of pneumococci and Polysaccharide Pneumococcal vaccine (PPA23) effective on 23 different types. The first provides a lifetime protection. A single dose is sufficient for children over 2 years of age and adults. The second type of vaccine can only be made after 2 years of age. It has 5 years of protection and it should be repeated every 5 years ”.

Prof. Dr. Füsun Eroğlu stated that when the pneumonia vaccine is applied to high-risk people, it can protect against severe infections, and listed the people who should have the pneumonia vaccine as follows:
