While the battery-powered vehicle industry is advancing to the future with rapid steps, Tesla, which has an important place in the world agenda, is entering a new era in Tesla's battery systems. The new battery cell, which Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced in the past months, has created excitement and has been named '1 million mile battery' to be developed jointly with CATL. In battery production, Tesla and Panasonic firms have evolved their journeys, which they started by collaborating, and a special statement came from Panasonic about new battery technology.

Producing a battery cell for Tesla, the world's leading electric car manufacturer, but with this new agreement, Panasonic has taken a new step to stay in competition. According to Reuters' report, the leading brand in the technology industry will not take the '2017' lithium ion cells introduced for Tesla Model 3 with the nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) cathode chemistry in 2170!

"Panasonic has now reduced the amount of cobalt in battery cells to less than 5 percent," US Electric Vehicle Battery Chief Yasuaki Takamoto said. We are working to improve this, and we will soon be on the market with cobalt-free batteries highlighted by Tesla CEO Elon Musk for a long time. Starting in September 2020, we will begin transforming the lines at the company's factory in Nevada, where it works with Tesla, and further increase the energy density of the cells. As electric vehicles evolve and their number increases, various battery requirements will emerge. We also carry out our works by anticipating this diversity need. ”

New Batteries Will Not Contain Cobalt

According to a statement from the Panasonic US Electric Vehicle Battery Plant, the brand plans to increase the energy density of the '2170' battery cells it provides to Tesla by 20 percent in five years and commercialize a cobalt-free version. In this way, it aims to increase the environmentalist structure while reducing the cost. In addition to this system, which is an important step to increase the distance that can be reached with a single charge, battery cells will not contain cobalt.

The Panasonic US Electric Vehicle Battery Plant aims to increase the energy density of 700 lithium-ion battery cells, which are the battery cells with the highest energy density of more than 2170 Watt hours per liter, thereby both planning to cover more distance and work at lower costs. .

With the new technology that does not contain cobalt, both the costs will be reduced and it will become more environmentally friendly.

For lithium-ion batteries, most cathodes use metal ion combinations such as nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) or nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA). Cathodes can cover roughly half of the material costs for the entire battery, and since cobalt is the most expensive element among them, the firm, which is disrupted by Tesla, plans to continue its association with Tesla again.

Poor Production Conditions in the Democratic Republic of Congo

With this release, this is a big headache for Tesla, given the controversial working conditions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the producing country while making the batteries more stable.

With the elimination of addiction to cobalta, one of the rarest minerals in the world, these batteries will also have a reusable structure. This will make production easier and Democratic Congo countries producing under difficult conditions will be able to produce in different places than the productions.
