BioLPG: European Commission Clean Vehicle Grant Program

The 20 billion Euro 'clean vehicle' grant program announced by the European Commission has led to competition in alternative fuel technologies. BioLPG, the sustainable form of LPG, which is used extensively in many countries, can be produced from domestic and industrial vegetable oil waste. The carbon emission and solid particle production of bioLPG, which has become widespread in Europe, are also at much lower levels compared to other fossil fuels. David M. Johnson, CEO of BRC, the world's largest alternative fuel systems manufacturer, said, “We have published our Environmental and Social Governance Report. As BRC, we are committed to aiming zero emission at the center of our sustainability vision ”.

The 'clean vehicle' grant of 20 billion Euros, announced by the European Commission in June, has led to competition in alternative fuel technologies. Among the options developed as an alternative to fossil fuels we use in our vehicles, bioLPG, which produces the least carbon emission and is produced by converting from vegetable oil waste, stands out with its environmental friendliness, easy production and widespread use.

BioLPG, produced using methods similar to biodiesel, is obtained by enriching domestic or industrial vegetable oils with hydrogen gas.

According to the data published in the 'BioLPG Convertible Future' report published by the World LPG Organization (WLPGA) in 2018, bioLPG emits less carbon than all fossil fuels.

Used vegetable oils turn into fuel

BioLPG, which is produced by enriching vegetable oils with hydrogen gas, consumes 60 percent of waste material in the production process. According to the data in the WLPGA report, scientific studies are continuing to provide more efficient and lower cost bioLPG, which can be produced from waste oils rich in oil, as well as woody materials with high carbon levels.

More environmentally friendly than other bio fuels as well as fossil fuels

BioLPG, the converted and sustainable form of LPG with the lowest carbon emission among fossil fuels, stands out as the most environmentally friendly fuel compared to other bio fuels. According to the WLPGA report, bioLPG, which emits an average of 100 CO2e / MJ with a carbon emission value of 80 CO2e / MJ, gasoline with 30 CO2e / MJ and biodiesel with a carbon emission of 10 CO2e / MJ, said the United Nations International Panel on Climate Change. is below the global warming factor (GWP) values announced by (IPCC). According to IPCC data, the GWP factor of LPG obtained from fossil sources was declared as '0'.

'BioLPG will be the fuel of the future'

biolpg'n evaluating the advantages of CEO of BRC Turkey Kadir Knitter, "Compared with other alternative fuels biolpg converted and come forward to be sustainable. Lithium batteries used in electric vehicles have a limited lifespan and require replacement. This technology that we currently use in our electronic devices creates 'non-recyclable' wastes. Diesel fuel, which produces solid particles that harm human health, has been banned in many European countries, especially Germany. Using the same conversion principle as LPG used in many countries of the world, bioLPG can be safely consumed in any area where LPG is used. "We can say that bioLPG will be the fuel of many vehicles in the future, with the results of the efforts made to reduce production costs."

'Our vision is net zero emission'

David M. Johnson, CEO of BRC, the world's largest alternative fuel systems manufacturer, emphasized that their targets are zero emissions and said, “We have published our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report. At the heart of our sustainable vision are our products consisting of low-carbon, clean transportation solutions, and our commitment to reducing the carbon footprint at the heart of our activities. The road to sustainable transportation is to produce technologies that are cost competitive and suitable for market demands. We, too, are working hard towards our long-term net zero emission targets. We believe that focusing on renewable and decarbonised gases provides an opportunity for clean and sustainable mobility as well as increasing economic recovery, creating new jobs and reaching our emission reduction targets ”.

LPG FACTS:

LPG has a low carbon-hydrogen ratio compared to most hydrocarbon fuels. Therefore, much less carbon dioxide (CO2) is produced per unit of energy produced.

LPG is a mixture of butane and propane gases in different proportions. Although it varies according to the mixture rate, it produces more energy per kilogram than all other hydrocarbon fuels (natural gas, gasoline, diesel etc.). It has a high calorific value.

According to the United Nations International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the global warming potential (GWP) factor of carbon dioxide (CO2) is 1, while that of natural gas (methane) is 25 and that of LPG is 0.

The most important pollutants in terms of air pollution and human health are solid particles (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). In European Union countries, it is calculated that the health expenditures arising from PM are 75.000 Euro per ton and that of NOx is 12.000 Euro.

It is estimated that solid particles, air pollution that occurs, reduce the lives of every person in the European Union countries by an average of 8 to 6 months. It is also determined that respiratory tract problems caused by open fires cost 1,5 million people a year.

Solid particles (PM) emissions of LPG are 25-35 times less than wood and coal, 10 times less than diesel, 30 percent less than gasoline.

Among the automotive fuels, the lowest emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) is LPG autogas. A vehicle with LPG produces 50 percent less NOx per kilometer than a natural gas vehicle, 75 percent compared to a gasoline vehicle and 200 percent less than a diesel vehicle.

Considering the health expenditures caused by harmful substances emitted per 1000 kilometers in the European Union, LPG autogas provides 70 percent less health expenditure than gasoline and 700 percent less than diesel.

According to the target set for 2020 in the European Union countries, the share of LPG autogas in automotive fuels, which is currently 2 percent, is expected to be increased to 10 percent. Today, LPG autogas has reached a 12% share among automotive fuels in our country. In this respect, Turkey, the European Union's 2020 target already has caught and passed.

Approximately 5 million vehicles in our country use LPG autogas. In this way, approximately 2 million tons less CO2 emission is realized every year. - Hibya News Agency
