Who is Turhan Selçuk?

Turhan Selçuk (30 July 1922, Milas - 11 March 2010, Istanbul), Turkish cartoonist. It is one of the names of Turkish humor. Turkey Semih Balcıoğlu and Ferid Predicting together with the founder of the Association of Cartoonists.

He was born in Milas in 1922. Her father is Mehmet Kasım Selçuk and her mother is Hikmet Selçuk. The task of the soldier's father, who in his childhood because Turkey found a very different place. He graduated from Adana Erkek High School in 1941.

His first cartoons were published in Türk Sözü newspaper published in Adana in 1941 and in Red and White, Sut sports magazines published in Istanbul. The artist, who first started working in Akbaba in 1943, worked as a cartoonist and painter in the Tasvir newspaper in 1948. Refik Halit Karay has drawn the lead in Aydede. He drew in the magazines Akis, Yön, Devrim, and Community in Yeni Istanbul, Yeni Gazete, Aksam, Milliyet, Cumhuriyet newspapers. Together with his brother İlhan Selçuk, he published 41 and a half (1952), Cartoon (1953) and Dolmuş (1956) magazines.

Known for the series Abdülcanbaz, which he started to draw in Milliyet newspaper in 1957, this character was also played in theater and cinema. In addition, Abdülcanbaz was pictured on a postage stamp by PTT in 1991. Turkey and caricature artists exhibited in many museums in Europe, "Human Rights" a cartoon exhibition opened for the first time in Strasbourg with the Council of Europe's recommendations and has exhibited in many countries (1992-1997). His cartoon titled “Peace and Book” was used in posters and logos of the book reading campaign launched by the Council of Europe in 1992. Illustrator Turhan Selçuk was last drawing in Cumhuriyet newspaper. He had an operation in Acıbadem Maslak Hospital due to the rupture of the aorta in the abdomen. Selçuk, who was taken to intensive care after this operation, died on 11 March 2010 in Istanbul. Every year, awards are given by Milas Municipality under the name of “International Turhan Selçuk Cartoon Competition” in memory of Turhan Selçuk.
