The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance is moving on to a new collaboration model that will support competition and profitability. As members of one of the world's leading automotive alliances, Groupe Renault, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announced the initiatives that are part of the new collaboration model that will increase the Alliance's competitiveness and profitability, based on the collaboration of three partner companies today.

Alliance partners will use the “leader-follower” principle to strengthen efficiency and competitiveness in their products and technologies.

Each of the members will serve as a gateway and support mechanism to increase the competitiveness of partners, leading in regions with strong strategic trump cards.

Alliance members will continue to produce their products and technologies according to the highest industry standards in the market.

One of the Leading Automotive Alliances

As members of one of the world's leading automotive alliances, Groupe Renault, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announced the initiatives that are part of the new collaboration model that will increase the Alliance's competitiveness and profitability, based on the collaboration of three partner companies today.

Member companies will develop their existing Alliance benefits in areas such as joint purchasing, using their own leadership positions and geographic powers to support their partners' business development.

Alliance's three partners will work to increase the competitiveness, sustainable profitability and social and environmental responsibility of Alliance member companies, while covering all vehicle segments and technologies, across all geographies, for the benefit of each customer.

The leaders of the three companies have adopted the following leader-follower program principles for the vehicles they will collaborate with:

To further the Alliance's standardization strategy from the platform to the upper body;

For each product segment, focusing on a main vehicle (leader vehicle) and sister vehicles designed by the leader company and supported by the followers' teams;

To ensure that the leading and follower tools of each brand are produced using the most competitive equipment, including grouping production where appropriate;

Continue to rely on production sharing where the leader-follower principle is currently applied in light commercial vehicles.

The leader-follower strategy is expected to reduce the model investment cost of vehicles covered by this principle by up to 40%. These benefits are expected to be provided in addition to the existing synergies that are already in practice today.

Each company will concentrate on its main regions and serve as a reference organization for each Alliance member to rank among the most competitive companies in these regions and to increase their competitiveness.

Under this principle, Nissan in China, North America and Japan; Renault in Europe, Russia, South America and North Africa; Mitsubishi Motors will take the lead in the ASEAN and Oceania regions.

As each company is a reference company in its own regions, by increasing sharing opportunities, fixed cost sharing will be maximized and the assets of each company will be utilized.

Companies' product portfolio updates will also be made according to the leader-follower principle, and leader and follower vehicles will be produced with the most competitive equipment. For example:

After 2025, the renewal of the C-SUV segment is led by Nissan, while Renault will lead the renewal of the B-SUV segment in Europe.

In Latin America, B segment product platforms will be rationalized, and Renault and Nissan products will be downgraded from four variants to just one product. The production of this platform will be carried out for both Renault and Nissan at two plants.

Alliance members will take advantage of collaboration opportunities between Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors in Southeast Asia and Japan, as in ultra mini (kei car) vehicles.

According to the announced collaboration schemes, approximately 50% of the Alliance models will be developed and produced under the leader follower strategy by 2025.

In terms of technology efficiency, Alliance members continue to capitalize their existing assets; each member company will continue to share their investment in platforms, transmission components and technologies.

This sharing led to the successful production of the CMF-B platform for Renault Clio and Nissan Juke, as well as the kei car platform for Nissan Dayz and Mitsubishi eK Wagon, which has proven its efficiency in powertrain and platform development.
