Critical Design Phase of F-16 Electronic Warfare and Support Systems Completed

Within the scope of the F-16 Electronic Warfare Pod Project carried out by TÜBİTAK-BİLGEM, the critical design phases of EHPOD and EDPOD systems have been successfully completed.

The critical design phases of the F-2014 Electronic Warfare Pod (EHPOD) and F-16 Electronic Support Pod (EDPOD) Systems, whose development activities started in 16 by the TÜBİTAK Information and Information Security Advanced Technologies Research Center (BİLGEM), based on the needs of the Turkish Air Force Command, completed successfully.

F-16 Electronic Warfare Pod (EHPOD)

Electronic Countermeasure (ECT) systems are used to mix or mislead radars. ECT Systems; they can create a large number of false targets on enemy radar, hide real targets or move them randomly. ECT Systems, which provide effective protection of the platforms to which they are connected, against guided missiles, are used by the air force of most countries against attacks in hostile environment.

EHPOD is being developed as a self-protection system that includes the Radar Warning Receiver (RIA) and ECT subsystems and can function on its own. The RIA subsystem detects the broadcasts of radar systems with multiple broadband antennas located in the pode. The RIA subsystem periodically scans the frequency band and determines the parameters of the received signals such as frequency, pulse width, direction and pulse repetition interval. Using these measurements, the signals are separated and the broadcast type is determined. On the other hand, ECT subsystem has wide instant bandwidth and Digital RF memory capabilities. Task-specific threats and ECT techniques can be programmed into the system based on the outcomes of the threat analysis.

System; It is designed for detecting and diagnosing large-scale threats and protects the platform against threats with the ECT subsystem and the Counter Measure Release System in coordination with it.

General features

RIA and ECT subsystems together;

  • Broadband operation
  • Engage in multiple threats at the same time
  • High output power
  • Direction with high precision
  • Narrow and broadband Radar Warning Receiver

F-16 Electronic Support Pod (EDPOD)

The F-16 Tatik Electronic Support Pod (EDPOD), developed by TÜBİTAK-BİLGEM, was developed to detect and diagnose threat radars and to contribute to the Electronic Battle Order (EMD) using the location information of threat radars.

EDPOD System detects threat radars with Broadband and Narrow Band Receiver. It determines the direction of arrival, frequency, pulse width, pulse amplitude, pulse repetition interval, antenna scanning and in-pulse modulation parameters of detected radars. Calculates location information using the direction of arrival information of radars. It records the contact parameters, location information, DTKs (Pulse Identification Word) and AF (Intermediate Frequency) data of the radars for post-task analysis. It transmits threat information to the Ground Support System via Link-16 network and to other EDPODs in the field of duty. EDPOD System ensures that the received records are understood with the software in the Ground Support System. At the end of the analysis, Electronic Warfare (EH) contributes to updating the knowledge bank.

General features:

  • Broadband operation
  • Multiple threats detection at the same time
  • High receiver sensitivity
  • High sensitivity threat direction finding and location estimation
  • Narrow and broadband receiver
  • High recording capacity
  • Transmission of data to Ground Support and other EDPODs in the field of duty with Link-16
  • Reality developed by TUBITAK ZamUsing the Instant Operating System (GZIS)
  • Analysis of post-task / order with Analysis Software

EHPOD and EDPOD systems will be used externally under the body, such as the AN / ALQ-211 Electronic Warfare Pod in the Turkish Air Force.
